How does an irrigation zone valve work?
A 24 VAC solenoid opens a pilot orifice so line pressure lifts the diaphragm and water flows to the zone. When power is removed, the pilot closes and pressure reseats the diaphragm. Debris, a torn diaphragm, or a failed solenoid are the usual reasons a valve sticks open or closed.
What size irrigation valve do I need?
Match valve size to the zone’s flow (GPM) and pipe size—commonly 1" for residential zones. Undersized valves create pressure loss; oversized valves can be harder to seat at very low flows. Use the valve’s flow chart and keep velocity reasonable in the lateral.
What is the difference between a globe and angle irrigation valve?
Globe valves have inlet and outlet in line; angle valves turn the flow 90°, useful when piping rises out of a manifold into a lateral. Performance is similar when sized correctly—pick the body style that fits the manifold geometry.
Why won’t my irrigation valve open?
Test for 24 VAC at the solenoid when the station is on. If voltage is present, the solenoid or diaphragm may be bad; if not, chase wiring, common wire, or controller output. Also open the bleeder screw briefly to see if the valve can operate manually—if manual works but electric does not, focus on solenoid/wiring.
Why is my irrigation valve stuck open?
Debris under the diaphragm, a damaged diaphragm, or a solenoid that will not seat can keep a valve open. Shut water supply, disassemble and clean the valve, replace the diaphragm kit if torn, and flush the mainline. A leaking bleeder screw or manual bleed lever left open will also pass water.
What wire gauge should I use for irrigation valves?
For most residential runs, 18 AWG multi-strand irrigation wire is standard. Longer runs or many valves may need 14–16 AWG to limit voltage drop. Always include a spare wire in the bundle for future zones or a broken conductor.
How many valves can share a common wire?
All zone valves typically share one common (COM) conductor returning to the controller. Size the common for the longest run and highest simultaneous load. Keep splices waterproof with grease-filled connectors.
What is a valve box and how deep should it be?
A valve box protects valves and wire splices while allowing service access. Set the box so the lid is flush with finished grade, with enough depth for the valve bonnet and room to lift the solenoid. Use gravel beneath for drainage.
Do I need a pressure-regulating valve?
If static pressure is high (often above ~60–70 psi) or misting occurs, use a pressure-regulating zone valve or a separate regulator. Regulating spray bodies can also tame pressure at the head.
What is a reclaimed water irrigation valve?
Reclaimed (purple-handle) valves are marked for non-potable water and often include features required by local code. Do not use potable-only labeling on reclaim systems—follow local cross-connection rules.
Can I use Hunter valves with other brand controllers?
Yes. Nearly all landscape valves use 24 VAC solenoids and work with Hunter, Rain Bird, Toro, and other timers. Match voltage and confirm the solenoid is not a latching DC type meant for battery nodes.
What is a flow control stem on a valve?
Flow control limits how far the diaphragm opens, useful to throttle a zone that is over-pressured or to balance manifolds. It is not a substitute for proper nozzle selection and pressure regulation.
How do I winterize irrigation valves?
Blow out the system with compressed air at safe pressures, or drain per local practice. Leave valves and solenoids protected in boxes; do not store water in above-ground backflows in freezing climates. Follow local codes for backflow freeze protection.
What causes a chattering irrigation valve?
Chatter often means low flow for the valve size, air in the line, or a failing diaphragm spring. Ensure the zone draws enough GPM, purge air, and replace rebuild kits when rubber is hardened.
Should solenoids be installed pointing up?
Install per the valve manufacturer—many allow multiple orientations, but keeping the solenoid accessible and out of standing mud helps service life. Avoid burying solenoids outside a box.

A manifold groups multiple zone valves on a shared inlet for compact valve-box installs. Prefab manifolds speed builds; custom PVC manifolds fit odd geometries.
Should I install a shutoff before each valve?
Isolation balls on manifolds help service one zone without draining the whole system. They add cost but save time on commercial and large residential manifolds.
How do I find a buried valve box?
Use as-built plans, a wire tracer on the common/station wire, or probe carefully along green belts. Mark lids flush with grade after landscaping so mowers do not bury them.
What grease should I use on valve solenoid threads?
Use silicone-compatible lubricant approved for potable/irrigation valves if recommended—avoid petroleum jelly that swells rubber. Many solenoids install dry per instructions.
Can tree roots crush irrigation valves?
Yes. Keep boxes out of known root paths when possible, use sturdy boxes, and inspect after storms. Root intrusion also damages drip and low-voltage lighting cable.
What is a double-chamber irrigation valve?
Some commercial valves use design features for smoother regulation and debris handling. For most homes, a quality residential diaphragm valve is enough when sized correctly.
How do I rebuild a Hunter irrigation valve?
Shut water, relieve pressure, remove the bonnet springs/diaphragm, clean seats, install a diaphragm kit, and reassemble to torque specs. Replace solenoids that show heat damage.
Why does my master valve stay on?
Same diagnostics as a zone valve stuck open—debris, diaphragm, or solenoid—plus programming that enables MV incorrectly. Confirm only one master on the supply.
Do I need waterproof wire connectors for valves?
Yes. Direct-burial grease-filled connectors prevent corrosion on 24 VAC splices. Tape-only splices fail within seasons in wet boxes.
