What is a pump start relay on an irrigation controller?

A pump start relay (PSR) is a dry-contact or dedicated terminal that signals a booster or well pump to run whenever a zone valves opens. The controller does not power the pump motor—it only closes a low-voltage circuit to the relay. Size the relay for the pump contactor, and never land pump line voltage on irrigation station terminals.
